Dennis O’Rourke – Chairman

Dennis founded Sureway in 1973, nurturing the company from modest beginnings in water and sewer construction into one of Western Canada’s leading construction contractors. Dennis is known among his peers as a pioneer and risk taker who thrives on challenges. He has consistently shaped a competitive edge for Sureway by securing the latest, largest, and most productive equipment in the industry.

Dennis has championed Sureway’s work in many expansive and complex projects, including the southeast leg of the Anthony Henday ring road, the first public-private partnership project of its kind in Alberta. He’s continued Sureway’s involvement in P3 projects, most recently with the northeast leg of the Anthony Henday. Dennis’ enterprising spirit has diversified Sureway’s business units, advancing the company’s role in Alberta’s infrastructure and communities. He’s further focused Sureway’s expertise in civil scopes for industrial construction.

Known to be a generous corporate and community citizen, Dennis prefers to keep a low profile while donating both time and money to numerous educational and charitable organizations and causes. These include the Alberta Cancer Foundation, Notre Dame College, The Alberta Heart Institute, the University Hospital Foundation, STARS, CNIB, University of Alberta, Capital Care Foundation, Kids for Cancer, YMCA, and many others. Dennis and his wife Elizabeth are pleased to make a home in Edmonton. He shares his passion for sports with his 3 children and 4 grandchildren.

Bruce Hagstrom – President, Sureway Construction

Bruce began his construction career in 1971 as a field technologist for Associated Engineering after graduating from NAIT’s Civil Engineering Technology program. He joined Sureway in 1975, then a modest water and sewer utility contractor. Over the last 50 years, Bruce has been central to Sureway’s growth and development into one of western Canada’s leading civil construction companies.

Bruce’s managerial capabilities and reputation in the community for integrity, quality and service, has resulted in steady growth for Sureway Earthworks and Underground Land Development Division as well as  expansion into significant highway construction projects and industrial partnerships. He understands the minute details of a construction job on the ground as well as the nuanced financial considerations required to execute a complex contract on time and on budget. In 2020 Bruce was honored by the Urban Development Institute with a lifetime achievement award.  He is known as an innovator who enjoys nothing more than business.

In recent years, under Bruce’s leadership, and with the assistance of a community and stakeholder relations manager, Sureway has partnered with Indigenous communities to ensure recognition of and respect for First Nations culture. Similarly, Bruce has ensured that the Sureway team is attentive to responsible environmental regulation consistent with the needs of a greening economy.

Sureway, under Bruce’s leadership, has an enviable employee retention rate. He values his employees and respects their opinions, often incorporating their suggestions into his business plans. He also encourages senior staff to mentor junior employees so that knowledge will be passed on to the next generation of skilled workers.

Above all, Bruce is well known in the community as a philanthropist, giving generously both corporately and personally to the community, including to health services, particularly for cancer, and to the arts, including the Edmonton Symphony, Edmonton Opera, Jazz Society, Citadel Theatre, Citie Ballet, and various other organizations.

Trevor Wallace, P.Eng, B.Sc. – President, Sureway Industrial Services Ltd. (SISL); Director of Estimating, Sureway Construction

Trevor is a Professional Engineer with 27 years of experience in industrial construction, land development and municipal infrastructure.  Trevor has been with Sureway since 1998, gaining valuable exposure to all aspects of Sureway’s business through his progressive roles in field supervision, project management, estimating and being a project sponsor for some of Sureway’s largest projects.  This breadth of experience and in depth knowledge of all aspects of our business has prepared Trevor to excel in his current role as Director of Estimating for all the Sureway Group of Companies.

In addition to Trevor’s Director of Estimating role, he is also the President of Sureway Industrial Services Ltd. (SISL) – Sureway’s mechanical construction and pipe fabrication business.  Trevor has been the President of SISL since 2017, when Sureway acquired the industrial division of Cormode and Dickson and rebranded to Sureway Industrial Services Ltd..  Through Trevor’s leadership, SISL has developed a client base throughout Western Canada including many of the largest Midstream companies (TC Energy, Enbridge, Gibson Energy) and Petrochemical facilities in the Alberta Industrial Heartland.

Trevor attended the University of Alberta, obtaining both a BSc. in Civil Engineering and a B.Sc. in Physiology.

Brian Hunting – Equipment Manager

A licensed HD mechanic for over 30 years, Brian’s expertise, work ethic and innovative problem solving has had no small part in Sureway’s success. Previously a field mechanic with Sureway Construction for 13 years, Brian has accrued a wealth of hands on experience to accompany his education. Now serving as equipment manager, he is able to showcase his business aptitude as well; working closely with manufacturers, and equipment costing, while remaining a leader, and troubleshooting alongside his technicians on the shop floor.

​Having apprenticed at Coneco equipment, and going on to own his own business (Hunting Enterprises Inc.), Brian has garnered experience in all aspects of the equipment business. Wanting to pass on some of his trade mastery, he has also spent time at NAIT as an H.E.T instructor. Despite his incredibly established base, he does not shy away from learning or embracing something new. Keeping a results oriented mindset, he is constantly seeking new and innovative ways to streamline and improve his workplace.

Dan Soupal, P.Eng – Division Manager Fort McMurray

Originally beginning his career as a Civil Engineering Technologist in the private land development sector Dan first encountered Sureway while working on a large residential development in Fort McMurray.  In 2010 he decided to join Sureway and relocated with his family to Fort McMurray on a permanent basis where he is responsible for the overall management of Sureway’s day to day operations in the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo (RMWB).

Since joining with Sureway, Dan and his team in Fort McMurray have developed strong trusting relationships and have established deep roots throughout the community with a multitude of clients in both the private and public sectors, equally with consultants, vendors, suppliers, and other organizations.  Through their hard work and dedication, Dan and his team have also established a dependable reputation as a local general civil contracting group and land developer which delivers top quality civil projects of virtually any size within the region that range from major water and sewer infrastructure installations to large earthworks and highway construction projects to residential and commercial developments.

Being originally from Fort McMurray and having a great passion for the Region, Dan is involved with various committees where he represents Sureway in both the capacity of a local heavy civil contracting firm and as a local land developer.  Through these committees he actively participates in constructability reviews, red tape reduction initiatives, and many other efforts to improve stakeholder relations and business interactions conducted in these sectors within the Region.

Dan originally obtained a diploma in Civil Engineering Technology from the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT) and later completed a B.A.Sc in Civil Engineering degree from the University of British Columbia.

Robert McKenna, P.Eng – Industrial Division Operations Manager

Rob is a Professional Engineer with 16 years of experience in civil, earthworks and underground construction projects. Rob provides strategic leadership for Sureway’s Industrial Division, focused on safety, project delivery, staffing and mentorship.  Rob has experience successfully managing multiple large scale industrial construction projects in excess of $200M.  He is able to translate the lessons learned on these projects to the growth and development of our teams.

Rob attended Dalhousie University in Halifax where he obtained a Bachelor of Civil Engineering degree.

Nick Prudhomme, P.Eng – Sr. Project Manager, Infrastructure

Nick is a Professional Engineer with 17 years of experience in civil construction.  With a strong attention to detail and excellent team management skills, Nick has been responsible for managing many of Sureway’s largest and most complex projects.  Nick’s experience has focused on Infrastructure and Transportation projects, but also spans to include the Industrial and Land Development markets.  This depth of experience has allowed Nick to be a trusted leader and mentor within Sureway’s Project Management group.

Nick attended the University of Alberta where he obtained a BSc. in Civil Engineering degree.

Ryan Reich, P.Eng – Sr. Project Manager, Underground Field Manager

Ryan is a Professional Engineer with 21 years of experience in civil construction and consulting engineering. He has been principally involved in Design and Construction Management of Municipal Underground and Roadway Construction Projects, Residential Subdivision Development and Industrial Site Development. Over the years working in consulting engineering and with Sureway, Ryan has gained extensive knowledge to plan and deliver a wide variety of construction projects.

In addition to his Project Management role, Ryan is responsible for leading Sureway’s Underground Field Utilities crew.

Ryan attended the University of Alberta where he obtained a BSc. in Civil Engineering degree with an Environmental specialization.

Ryan Krawchuk, P.Eng, MBA – Business Development Manager

Ryan is a Professional Engineer with 14 years experience in Engineering, Project Management and Business Development.  His experience crosses construction and consulting engineering, with an emphasis on Oil & Gas, Industrial and Infrastructure markets.  Ryan is focused on developing strong relationships with our clients and leading Sureway’s pursuits of strategic projects and clients.

Ryan attended the University of Alberta, obtaining both a BSc. in Civil Engineering and MBA with a specialization in finance.

Kevin Leung, P.Eng, – Land Development Manager

Kevin is a Civil Engineer with over 15 years of experience. In addition to his role as Land Development Manager of Sureway Construction Management Kevin is also the Division Manager of Yellowhead Inspections. Kevin oversees daily management of Land Development and CCC/FAC operations, financial management of these divisions and is the primary point of contact with Epcor for collaboration and approvals. In addition, Kevin takes on the role of quality control and quality assurance of all underground projects. With his many years of experience working in consulting engineering Kevin has gained extensive knowledge to plan and deliver a wide variety of land development, urban rehabilitation and infrastructure construction projects. Kevin attended the University of Alberta, obtaining a BSc. in Civil Engineering.

Greg Irving, CRSP – Director of Health and Safety

Greg is responsible for managing the safety program for all Sureway projects which includes: Management of Safety Coordinators and Safety Administration; Setting a positive example for safety at all times; Taking part in hazard assessment and hazard control; Site inspections; Ensuring training is appropriate and delivered in an efficient and effective manner; Investigation of loss and no loss incidents; Analysis of statistics; Being a liaison with upper Management regarding safety matters.

Greg has been a National Construction Safety Association Officer since 2008. He attended the University of Alberta Faculty of Extension to receive his Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety. In 2021, Mr. Irving was successful in writing the Board of the Canadian Registered Safety Professionals exam and has been granted a CRSP designation.

Greg is the Safety Committee Chair on the Alberta Roadbuilders & Heavy Construction Association (ARHCA) Board.
